Grant leads to Mobile Prairie Restoration Vehicle

Mobile Prairie Restoration Vehicle assisting with perscribed fire this spring

Grants and Gifts are Critical to Success

Recently, the Crane Trust was fortunate to receive a grant from the Union Pacific Foundation to purchase a Mobile Prairie Restoration Vehicle. You might be thinking… what’s that? It’s a Kubota Utility Vehicle that is outfitted with a sprayer for use in prescribed fire (coordinated burns on our prairie) and to spray noxious weeds.

The Land Management Team is busy during the growing season managing and restoring the Crane Trust’s lowland tallgrass prairie. This prairie is home to over 500 different plant species, nearly 250 recorded bird species, and a host of other wildlife. During their migration stopovers along the Platte River in the spring and fall, this vital habitat provides necessary foraging and staging resources for Sandhill Cranes and Whooping Cranes.

Each year, Crane Trust staff apply for grants from various foundations and organizations to support necessary projects and to offset operational costs. As an independent nonprofit, Crane Trust relies on support from donors, members, and friends to preserve this critical habitat.

Thank you to the Union Pacific Foundation for their support of the Mobile Prairie Restoration Vehicle and to all of the generous donors who support our work each year.
